In the context of the COVID-19 lockdown, The Masculinities Interior Audio Guide was made as a creative response to the Barbican Gallery’s Masculinities: Liberation Through Photography exhibition. The tour gives audio descriptions of four works in the exhibition: Knut Asdam’s Untitled, Pissing (1995), Bas Jan Ader’s I’m Too Sad to Tell You (1971), a photo from Rineke Dijkstra’s series Bullfighters (1994-2000) and Duane Michals’ The Return of the Prodigal Son (1982). Intermixed with these descriptions are audio works created in response to the artworks in the exhibition, exploring ideas related to the psychological and emotional experience of masculinity.
This work was featured as part of the Community View of the exhibition, in the form of an online resource, and Young Barbican Nights: Masculinities, a live streamed event on 19th August 2020. A recording of the Young Barbican Nights event can be viewed below.
